Great Scholarship Program Helps Tennessee Nurses

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Accourding to the Leaf Chronicle, Tennessee needs to fill more than 300 nursing faculty positions by 2010 to solve teaching shortages. It is estimated that as many as 2,500 student applications were denied entrance to Tennessee’s nursing schools in 2006 because the state lacks the nursing faculty to train them. To teach nursing, faculty must have earned a doctorate or Master of Science in Nursing.

About $1 million of the $1.4 million that will pay for the loan forgiveness program has come from the health care industry.

“The nursing school faculty is really where the bottleneck is in this whole nursing situation,” said Craig A. Becker, president of the Tennessee Hospital Association.
